Position: Charge Nurse - Spinal Injuries (Philipshill Ward)

The Role
Permanent band 6 Charge Nurse post has arisen to manage Philipshill ward within the QENSIU – this is a national unit that cares for patients who have sustained a spinal cord injury. Philipshill provides rehabilitation skills to prepare patients for discharge after a SCI. We are looking for an experienced registered nurse with current NMC registration and significant post‑registration experience at band 5 level with passion for rehabilitation.

Evidence of team‑working skills with ability to work using own initiative and knowledge around quality improvement to lead and support the SCN to demonstrate good outcomes for patients and staff. To undertake this role you must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills with nursing colleagues and members of the multi‑disciplinary team. You will be instrumental in ensuring a continuum of service delivery by responding to the many challenges presented daily on maintaining safe, effective, person‑centred care whilst supporting the senior charge nurse and deputising in their absence, having the knowledge and skills to report and elevate priorities to ensure the ward is safe.

Full‑time Position

Shift Pattern:
Rotational days and nights 11.5 hrs Monday – Sunday

Key Responsibilities

Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.

In the absence of the SCN, assume accountability for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the ward including work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff to ensure smooth running of the ward.

In conjunction with the SCN, set, monitor and evaluate standards of care within defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the ward and division to ensure adherence to, and delivery of, a high‑quality service.

Consult with the SCN to ensure that all nursing staff are aware of, and work within, local and division policies and procedures to maintain safe working practices for both patients and staff.

Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives/carers and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.

Lead and supervise/mentor junior staff/students who provide care to patients and act as a source of advice to ensure their educational needs are met.

Undertake teaching of registered/non‑registered nursing staff, including basic and post‑basic students, and participate in the implementation of staff personal development plans to facilitate ongoing development.

Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of patients/clients are met.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

Registered Nurse on the NMC Register.

Recognised post‑registration course and/or leadership.

Five years post‑registration experience, of which two years must be within neurosurgery or proven managerial and clinical skills.

Evidence of continuing professional development.

Proven involvement in quality improvement.
