Overview
Patient Services Assistant - OB/GYN at My Michigan Health. This is a front-line role providing clerical, secretarial and receptionist support for the practice. Coordinates patient flow by answering the phone, scheduling appointments, registering patients, verifying insurance information, confirming demographics, collecting payments, and may schedule tests/procedures and process referrals. - Strive for excellent customer service; acknowledge and welcome all patients, families and visitors. Greet customers and answer incoming calls in a timely manner; identify and address needs, concerns and/or complaints and take required action.
- Verify and update patient information for safety and accuracy; verify insurance coverage and correct provider assignment; complete and update forms including demographic, HIPAA, PPA, MSP, consent for treatment, and related documentation.
- Schedule patient appointments for all providers using practice management, EMR, insurance verification, Medifax, population health registry, and Iterminal.
- Register new patients and explain policies, including no-show, financial and collection policies; obtain email for satisfaction surveys and portal registration if available.
- Before departure, schedule future appointments, tests and procedures; collect copayments, process referrals, check out patients, obtain prior authorizations as needed.
- Understand and apply HIPAA privacy regulations; handle sensitive protected health information appropriately.
- Provide patient education on Televox (if applicable), financial policy, HIPAA, PCMH, PRC Satisfaction survey and Patient Portal.
- Coordinate primary care and specialty referrals within My Michigan Health and other systems; schedule appointments and testing as required and obtain insurance authorizations if needed.
- Maintain cash drawer and balance at end of day; post payments to patient accounts.
- Process all incoming communications; accurately fax, file, scan and maintain documents in the patient medical record.
- Perform office opening/closing procedures and may support multiple practices; understand and perform medication and prescription release processes.
- Demonstrate teamwork and professional communication; train/orient new employees on the Patient Service Assistant position.
- Support My Michigan Health’s mission, policies, and procedures; perform other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrate competency with Microsoft Windows and participate in learning opportunities as required.
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED - Equivalent
Experience:
Two years of experience in a medical office or similar setting preferred - Experience/
Skills:
Reading, writing, math and computer skills; keyboarding; knowledge of medical terminology; strong interpersonal communication; ability to work with diverse populations
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular/predictable attendance, and stay awake
- Capable of wearing PPE as required; ability to move about facility with or without assistive devices; overall vision and hearing adequate
- Physical Demands:
Sedentary with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs; some roles may involve lifting 11-20 lbs and standing/walking - Exposure to potentially infectious material and blood borne pathogens following health system guidelines
