Summary

This position is responsible for registration and insurance verification in all registration areas within My Michigan Health. It will make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance. A primary function is to perform point of service collections of copay and deductible amounts from patients at discharge in a diplomatic and customer-focused manner. The role requires teamwork and good communication skills.

Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Collection of co-payments: Collects co-pay amounts, posts payments, prints receipts, and balances cash at shift end. Provides patients with preprinted materials.
  • Patient communication: Explains insurance coverage, treatment costs, billing policies, and financial obligations. Sets up payment plans.
  • Financial arrangements: Makes arrangements for uninsured or underinsured patients and informs them of available financial assistance programs.
  • Insurance verification: Uses insurance websites to verify benefits and coverage, assesses co-pay and deductible amounts, and documents the information.
  • Qualifications
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Experience with insurance and patient accounts preferred; at least 1 year, with 4 years in a hospital setting preferred
    • Typing and basic computer skills
    • Basic math and customer service skills
    • Interpersonal and confidentiality skills
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and office practices preferred
    • CHAA certification preferred
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows
    Physical and Mental Requirements
    • Ability to handle stressful situations and public contact
    • Ability to wear protective equipment and move freely within the facility
    • Visual and hearing acuity
    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform postural changes
    • Exposure to infectious materials and adherence to safety protocols
    • Handling multiple tasks and maintaining attendance
    • Physical capacity to lift or carry up to 10 lbs occasionally
