Summary
The Pharmacy Technician is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician should be able to competently use hospital EMR for daily duties, use automated dispensing machines, compound IVs, charge and credit, fill orders, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.
Responsibilities- (20%) Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, trouble shoots problems, aides and trains nurses on dispensing problems.
- (20%) Compounds IV and piggyback medications, using aseptic technique and universal precautions. Follows USP 797 guidelines.
- (20%) Support the work of the pharmacists, assists in the set-up of orders and aide in the expedition of orders to the nursing units.
- (20%) Replaces and fills floor stock: fills EMS boxes and crash cart trays and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other hospital departments; stocks UD area and IV room.
- (10%) Fills, reconciles and exchanges 24 hour UD medicine carts.
- (10%) Answers phone, retrieves tubes and faxes.
- Repackages non-unit dose medications correctly using re-packager.
- Compounds oral and topical solutions and ointments.
- Run labels using the computer in an accurate and timely manner.
- Helps with duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.
- Assists with inventory and recordkeeping.
- Able to add barcodes to products, including compounded items, IVPBs, etc.
- Performs other related miscellaneous duties.

Experience:
New hire and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited or full license through the state of Michigan. Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license within 365 days of obtaining the temporary license.
A Pharmacist Intern License with the State of MI is also acceptable.

Education: High School Diploma or GED
Other Information Experience, Training and SkillsSuccessful completion of annual exam for Aseptic Technique within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter required.
Computer experience required.
Good math skills (pass a standard test), good organizational skills, a team player and ability to work under high pressure and time constraints are all required.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Medical Terminology knowledge preferred.
Medical Center or Retail Pharmacy experience preferred.
Physical / Mental Requirements and Typical Working ConditionsExposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
