Responsibilities- Regularly assess patient’s needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence‑based nursing practice (40%).
- Provide direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate (30%).
- Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan and make suggestions or participate in updating/revising the plan in collaboration with other team members (20%).
- Ensure knowledge and compliance with all local, state, federal regulations, guidelines, and hospital‑specific policies and procedures (10%).
- Demonstrate My Michigan Health mission, vision, and values and behave courteously and professionally at all times with patients, visitors, and co‑workers.
- Interpret information and reports and communicate pertinent data to the physician.
- May be assigned educator or quality data abstraction duties as needed.
- Educate patient/family based on assessed learning needs, readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables.
- Organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
- Manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.
- Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.
- Understand and utilize clinical pathways appropriately (unit specific).
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all situations.
- Document accurately, clearly, and concisely, including pertinent clinical data.
- Share information and report significant changes or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner.
- Participate in regulatory surveys.
- Participate in performance improvement activities.
- Assist with orientation and ongoing competencies.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and professional standards within a specialty.
- Understand role in emergency preparedness procedures.
- Obtain prenatal history, perform physical assessment, and perform Leopold’s maneuvers for fetal position.
- Assess fetal heart rate and identify maternal‑fetal risk factors.
- Palpate uterus to assess contraction frequency, length, and quality.
- Report and record normal and abnormal findings and formulate diagnoses.
- Decide when to perform vaginal examination and assess dilatation, effacement, and station of the cervix (sterile).
- Identify true labor, rupture of membranes, and perform nitrazine paper and amniotic fluid testing.
- Assist with sterile speculum examinations.
- Assess and document family interaction/support system and desired birthing plan.
- Explain diet, activity orders, and admission data with physician, nursing staff, family, and appropriate personnel.
- Prioritize and deliver care based on maternal‑fetal assessment of status.
- Identify high‑risk patients who may require consultation or transfer to a tertiary center.
- Obtain vital signs, fetal heart rate, and amniotic fluid characteristics during all labor stages and update nursing care plan.
- Identify and initiate appropriate nursing interventions for medication or complication side effects.
- Set up sterile delivery table and ensure emergency equipment is functioning.
- Position patient physiologically, clean perineum or abdomen sterily, and instruct family on hand‑washing and attire.
- Document birth time, assess Apgar scores, assist with newborn stabilization, CPR if indicated, and perform preliminary physical assessment.
- Recognize and notify of any neonatal abnormalities.
- Transfer newborns safely, identify mother and infant with identification bracelets, and send cord blood samples for laboratory analysis.
- Initiate newborn eye prophylaxis following protocol and enable early bonding.
- Document placental conditions, vessel count, and obtain cultures if indicated.
