PURPOSE:
SAH is working to continue to strengthen the temporary program funded by the Ministry of Health, known as the Clinical Scholar Program for the next fiscal year.
Clinical Scholars are experienced nurses with frontline clinical skills and competencies who are employed to provide clinical mentorship to nurse mentees (including new nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses, nurses with a requirement to upskill and more). The Clinical Scholar will provide role modelling, clinical coaching, and mentoring through at-the-elbow support using a variety of teaching techniques. The Clinical Scholar will promote enhancement of clinical skills, facilitating the development of critical thinking, and self-reflective learning for nurse mentees.
This position reports to the Manager of Clinical Professional Practice and Education.
DUTIES:
Provides in scope role modelling, clinical coaching, and mentoring through at-the-elbow support using a variety of teaching techniques.
Participates and collaborates with the Inter-professional health care team, to ensure the provision of patient care is consistent and collaborative across sectors of SAH, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary care models.
Effectively use the Standards of Nursing Practice and the Nursing Process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the patient.
Provides support and coaching to staff to adhere to accepted practices, to ensure staff safety and safe patient care.
Compliant with legislation, organizational and departmental, policies, regulations, standards and procedures related to patient care and occupational health and safety.
Ensures teaching, resourcing and coaching specific to the assessed learning needs of the mentees
Maintain commitment to self-growth and professional development by remaining current in knowledge and application of best practice through the utilization of appropriate research and literature.
Demonstrate good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
Provides support for health teaching to patients and family.
Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, and implementing improvements/changes as appropriate.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of a Practical Nursing Diploma Program
Current Registration with College of Nurses of Ontario in Good Standing
BCLS Certification required
Minimum 3 years recent (within 2 years) experience in clinical hospital frontline care at the acute or critical care level (acute medical inpatient, surgical inpatient or ED)
Minimum 1-year experience providing formal clinical teaching, training and mentorship, exceeding solely preceptor/mentor activities
ABILITIES:
Demonstrated clinical competency in planning and providing care for medically complex patients
Demonstrated knowledge and adherence to relevant Sault Area Hospital clinical practice resources
Sound understanding of the clinical processes combined with a strong aptitude and knowledge of evidence based best practices
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of various adult learning principals and techniques
Ability to contribute to program planning, support training others, work independently and within a diverse team
Demonstrated physical assessment skills, critical thinking skills and problem solving skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Crucial Conversations training an asset
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in effective therapeutic communication techniques and interviewing skills
Demonstrated ability to organize patient care demands and to set priorities in a rapidly changing environment.
Demonstrated understanding and commitment to patient and family centered care.
