Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer / Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist to support operations in the Carolinas and South Georgia. The Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist will apply technical knowledge to provide failure analysis and forensic consulting services for insurance, legal, industrial, and other clients, investigating vehicle accidents and failures involving vehicle systems (brakes, transmission, throttle, steering, etc.).
- Forensic engineering: perform failure analysis and forensic assignments within mechanical engineering based on scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and approved by the client.
- Investigate incident origin, failure mechanism, root cause, and the role of the mechanical system.
- Inspect sites/products/equipment; perform data retrieval and analysis; document conditions; conduct site surveys with 3D documentation tools; perform calculations; prepare CAD-based and manual sketches; order and evaluate laboratory testing.
- Review codes, standards, drawings, specifications, manuals, data logs, and related documents to evaluate design, installation, operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct analyses including industrial safety and accidents; machinery design and failure; product liability; design and safety; provide support on fire and explosion investigations involving mechanical systems.
- Initiate, develop, and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.
- Reconstruct vehicular accidents using analysis, CAE-based tools, and test data where appropriate.
- Analyze single and multiple vehicle collisions, perform damage analysis, speed analysis, roadway factors, perception and response times, lamp analysis, occupant kinematics, vehicle dynamics, braking efficiency of air brake systems on commercial vehicles, and potentially traffic signal analysis.
- Prepare reports and present findings to clients; create demonstrative diagrams and charts; provide analysis of incident causes.
- Document and preserve evidence; prepare written reports; provide expert testimony in litigation as necessary.
- Provide collision scene evidence analysis and forensic mapping of collision sites and vehicles; evaluate various forms of transportation.
- Inspect and analyze automotive or mechanical parts to determine cause of failure; analyze product liability, design, and safety.
- Perform other duties as requested.
- ACTAR Accreditation required.
- 8+ years of VAR/Mechanical experience required.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering required.
- P.E. licensed preferred.
- Strong technical writing skills.
- Physically able to climb ladders, walk on uneven surfaces, enter confined spaces, crawl under vehicles to inspect damage.
- Project management and/or field investigation experience strongly preferred.

- Ability to manage several investigations simultaneously; strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with clients at all levels.
- Strong report writing skills; independent judgment; analytical abilities.
- Ability to write scopes of work, budget estimates, schedules, reports, proposals, and other technical documents clearly.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-aided engineering/design software.
- Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients.
- Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and driving to job sites; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; good vision and depth perception.
- Overtime may be required for salaried exempt position.
- Travel up to 25% locally/regional; out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
