The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for advancing the City’s award-winning environmental sustainability and resiliency efforts through research, planning, programming, partnerships, and public outreach. Under the direction of the Community Development Director, this position will coordinate with multiple city departments to achieve sustainability goals and will lead citizen education and marketing initiatives that promote environmental awareness and engagement. In addition to core sustainability functions, the role supports both departmental and citywide planning initiatives by contributing to policy development, assisting with key projects, and integrating sustainability principles into community and organizational plans.

The Sustainability Coordinator also advises departments on sustainability practices related to operations, maintenance, and asset management. The ideal candidate will exercise a high degree of independent judgment, discretion, collaboration, and creativity in the development and implementation of sustainability projects, policies, and programs, both internally and externally. Excellent public speaking, presentation, and writing skills are required, as is the ability to interact comfortably with elected officials, executive staff, high-profile external partners, and diverse community groups.

Job Functions Planning & Research

Information regarding planning & research responsibilities will be provided from the City’s Sustainability Plan and related initiatives. The role will support research and analysis to inform policy development and strategic planning activities.

Programming
  • Update and track implementation strategies for Tybee Island’s Sustainability Plan
  • Assist with updates to departmental, community development, and citywide planning documents to reflect sustainability and resiliency priorities and ensure consistency with established goals and objectives.
  • Support the Community Development Director with planning-related projects, such as data mapping, project coordination, or administrative support during plan updates.
  • Coordinate activities of Tybee’s Sustainability Committee
  • Assist with updates to Tybee’s Beach Management Plan
  • Oversee Beach Ambassadors and Adopt-an-Area clean‑up programs
  • Review and provide feedback on beach use permits
  • Administer Department of Public Health grants for the Smoke‑Free Beach initiative
  • Administer the Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray program
  • Administer and assist with Tybee’s waste diversion grant
Partnerships
  • Serve as city liaison with partner agencies and organizations, including the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Environmental Protection Division (EPD), Marine Science Center, Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers, Manomet Shorebirds Organization, Public Service Commissioners Office, Sustainability Directors Network, Georgia Conservancy, and One Hundred Miles of Coastal Georgia
  • Continue collaboration with other local and regional municipal planning and sustainability offices (i.e., Savannah, Chatham County, etc.)
  • Collaborate with local sustainability leaders and community partners
Communications and Outreach
  • Maintain the Sustainable Tybee webpage  and the Resilient Tybee educational website
  • Coordinate annual beach signage printing and installation
  • Coordinate activities with Tree City USA and Bee City USA to maintain designations
  • Coordinate with the City’s Electric Vehicle initiative
  • Help coordinate Arbor Day and Earth Day events
