Bereavement Coordinator (Neonatal ICU)

Bereavement Support (Neonatal ICU)- Maternal care during labor with options of immediate post-delivery support:
Baby to remain at bedside, be held, or to bereavement room - Palliative Planning:
Navigating emotions and anticipated grieve during prenatal visits, pre-delivery neonatal consults, and scheduled checks during pregnancy - Introduction to LD for delivery and review of palliative or post-delivery support of mother/baby bonding
- Perform/obtain requested keepsakes with or without family involvement
- Epic nursing required charting (bereavement flowsheet – fetal demise; Post mortem – neonatal demise)
- Bereavement assessment – navigating emotional responses
- Pour molds & prep for pick up
- Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photo submission
- Maintain bereavement keepsake storage
- Disposition consents and funeral home notification
- Resource for follow up with funeral home issues, death certificates, and stillbirth acquisition
- Care of breast: suppression vs donation
- Bereavement room restock, bereavement room cleaning and replacement of equipment
- Resources for external counseling: navigating referrals
- Post discharge check in (2-3 days post-delivery)
- Phone or in-person follow up for molds, SIM card, emotional support 1-2 weeks
- Attendance at postpartum visit if on campus at Memorial
- Phone follow at 2-4 weeks
- Phone follow up at 2-3 months and additionally per patient request
- Patient and staff access to bereavement coordinator and support through cell phone
- Data collection (patient identification, gestation, COD, support given, and follow up issues)
- Donation research and coordination
- Bereavement education classes at Memorial and within the Southeast Georgia region; online at division level
- Review and maintenance of appropriate community resources and written material
- Support staff in navigating death, unexpected outcomes, and complex bereavement cases
- First birthday and holiday bereavement cards to families
- Annual host and coordination of Walk to Remember
- Emotional support for NICU mothers or HRP patients
- Participation in NICU support groups
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained…
