Job Summary
Under general supervision, plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in the operating room on a particular shift, in accordance with established patient care plans and philosophy. Provides care and support to patients before, during, and after surgery; assists the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.
Reporting StructureReports to the Surgery Nursing Director and/or designee.
Minimum Qualification Requirements- Education – Graduate of an accredited nursing program;
Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) degree required. - Work Experience – Minimum of two years of nursing experience in an acute healthcare setting preferred; operating room experience preferred.
- License/Certification – Current Tennessee State Licensed Practical Nurse with no restrictions; current CPR/BLS;
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for full‑time employees or within one year of hire date;
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required for full‑time employees or within one year of hire date.

- May perform circulating nurse duties: assist in positioning, respond to patient comfort and safety.
- Provide accurate care and handling of specimens.
- Observe and enforce strict asepsis standards, maintaining the sterile field.
- Check and monitor all equipment used during surgery.
- Document accurately in the patient EHR.
- Inventory all items pre‑ and post‑surgery.
- May perform scrub nurse duties: select and handle instruments and supplies, perform sharp and instrument counts.
- Provide direct and individualized nursing care based on scientific nursing principles.
- Initiate admission assessment within two hours of arrival, including pain assessment.
- Complete admission assessment within 24 hours.
- Monitor patient condition throughout shift, reassessing pain.
- Interpret changes in patient condition and abnormal lab values; communicate via shift documentation.
- Initiate a written plan of care on admission; incorporate nursing interventions, measurable outcomes, and discharge planning.
- Review and update the nursing plan of care as needed; involve patient or family in care planning.
- Request consultations based on assessment data to support problem solving; document in the medical record.
- Administer medications, including IV fluids and controlled substances, following policy and procedure.
- Accurately review physician orders and ensure implementation on schedule.
- Document nursing interventions and patient responses.
- Provide basic teaching as outlined in the plan of care; document teaching and outcomes.
- Evaluate patient outcomes and modify interventions as needed, including pain reassessment.
- Report changes in patient condition or adverse responses to the physician and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain acceptable standards of patient care.
- Arrange for needed supplies and equipment to be on hand.
- Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.
- May assist with other related duties and special project work as required.
- Prolonged standing and walking.
- Lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during an assigned shift.
- Use corrective eyewear; hear clearly with assistance.
- Possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases.
- Handle emergency and/or crisis situations.
