Modern Technical Staffing is recruiting on behalf of our client, a leading manufacturer recognized for its innovation in advanced automation and manufacturing systems. We are seeking an Automation and Robotics Specialist to join their growing engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced controls and robotics professional to lead automation projects from concept through to implementation in a modern, fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Position Overview:
The Automation and Robotics Specialist will lead the design, development, and implementation of automation solutions for manufacturing processes. This role involves programming and integrating electrical components and robots, managing system validation and safety standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design and development of automation systems, including controls, electrical, and pneumatic design.
Prepare detailed automation proposals, specify components, and manage testing, commissioning, and validation.
Install, program, and integrate PLCs, HMIs, robots, drives, sensors, and vision systems
, ensuring compliance with internal and customer standards.
Program and maintain Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kuka robots for welding and material handling (online/offline using CIM Station, Fanuc Weld Pro, Moto Sim, and Robot Studio).
Conduct ROI studies and present automation proposals for approval.
Integrate hardware and software systems to optimize throughput, reduce cycle times, and improve process efficiency.
Prepare documentation, work instructions, and training materials for production and maintenance teams.
Support new equipment installations, design reviews, and run-at-rate milestones to meet internal and customer PPAP standards.
Troubleshoot electrical, electromechanical, and control issues in collaboration with maintenance teams.
Lead and participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives (8D, 5 Whys, RCA, CI).
Contribute to APQP meetings and support DFM, PFMEA, control plans, and process capability studies.
Ensure safety compliance with OHSA, ESA, and CSA standards.
Education &
Certifications:
Bachelor’s or College Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or Robotics
.
P.Eng. designation (or eligibility) is an asset.
PMP certification is desirable.
Qualifications &
Experience:
5–10 years of hands-on experience in controls and automation within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or similar design software.
Strong ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, pneumatic/hydraulic schematics, and ladder logic.
Experience programming and troubleshooting Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Omron, and Siemens PLCs and HMIs.
Working knowledge of industrial networks, machine safety circuits, VFDs, DC/Servo drive systems
, and motion control.
Experience with
vision systems
, MIG/spot welding
, or tube bending is an asset.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Proficiency with MS Office
, including advanced Excel (macros, VBA preferred).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Willingness to travel as required for installations, training, and project support.
