The Town of Scarborough Fire Department is seeking a highly skilled, professional full‑time Deputy Fire Chief to join our senior management team leading our Emergency Medical Services Division. The Deputy Fire Chief will assist the Fire Chief in leading a busy, all‑hazards, combination department of over 100 employees in a community encompassing 54 square miles and a year‑round population of 24,000 residents, growing considerably larger during the summer season.
The department operates out of six fire stations and responds to nearly 6,000 calls for service per year. Bordering seven communities, we engage and operate regularly with our mutual aid partners in regional meetings, training opportunities, and emergency operations.
Duties include working with the Fire Chief to maintain a highly motivated, well‑trained workforce including 48 full‑time, 30 per‑dime, and 35 call members as well as a longstanding student live‑in partnership with the Community College. The Deputy Chief will lead our EMS Division, which has a proud history as the first formal municipal EMS agency in the State of Maine, and which has grown to three staffed Advanced Life Support Ambulances.
The successful candidate will demonstrate effective leadership and command presence while managing the EMS Division. The successful candidate will also direct all‑hazards emergency activities, including Incident Command at both Fire and EMS incidents, ensuring compliance with state and local protocols, department SOPs, SOGs, and General Orders; and performing other duties as required or assigned.
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Pro‑Board Firefighter I & II;
Pro Board Fire Officer 1 & 2; AVOC/EVOC. - State of Maine EMS Paramedic License (required).
- Firefighting/EMS experience in a full‑time department setting.
- Five (5) years Fire/EMS supervision/management experience.
- Successful completion of post‑offer physical exam, respiratory clearance, and comprehensive background check.
