About us

The Damen Ship repair & Conversion Division is part of the Damen Shipyards Group. We offer all types of maintenance, repair, conversion and refit work. We work on vessels and offshore constructions at our 10 Ship repair yards (with drydocks up to 420 x 80 meter) in the Netherlands, France, and Curacao, or at any location in the world with our Harbour & Voyage service.

Vessel owners rely on us because our ability, drawing on decades of industry experience, to effectively and reliably execute even the most challenging conversions and upgrades with minimal vessel downtime.

The role

As a Business Controller for the Damen Ship repair & Conversion Division, your role includes both financial forecasting / planning and control. You work closely with both the Finance Director and the Finance Managers at the yards to ensure effective financial management and decision making. You build bridges and are a key connector between these stakeholders. You have a deep understanding of finance, and are able to convert strategical decisions from the Management Team into financial insights and KPI’s.

Simultanously, you provide financial imput for optimizing financial performance, drive cost efficiency, and the achievement of strategic business objectives. You will be primarily based in Schiedam, but will also work from time to time in Gorinchem (Head office) and our Shipyards in Vlissingen, France and Curacao.

Key accountabilities

You, as a Business Controller:

  • Develop budgets and financial forecasts, monitor performance, and manage associated risks and opportunities;
  • Perform business control activities (budgeting, forecasting and business compliance) in close collaboration with senior Finance colleagues (both local and on a division level);
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends and variances. You compare and share financial ‘best practices’ and identify areas for improvement;
  • Responsible, on a division level, for preparing financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements;
  • Work closely with the group controllers (head office), financial director and local finance managers of the yards and other financial professionals to support various financial operations. This includes for example accounting position papers, internal control and risk management;
  • Conduct ad hoc financial analysis as required by management, for example for Capital Expenditures;
  • Work on projects, including ERP improvements and due diligence activities.
Skills & experience

The ideal candidate for this position has:

  • Master degree in Finance, Accounting, Business administration, or a related field. A Post Master (Register Controller or Register Accountant / CPA) is a pré;
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in Finance, with a focus on financial analysis, controlling, budgeting, and cost management;
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting techniques, and data analysis. You can effortlessly navigate in financial software and tools such as Power

    BI, Excel and One Stream;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, a high level of accuracy and an eye for details;
  • Strong communication skills in both Dutch and English. French is a pré.
