Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty is looking for a detail-oriented, high-energy Assistant Controller to manage day-to-day operations of our accounting department. This role supports the Controller in maintaining accurate financial records, managing a team of accounting specialists, and ensuring our 1,000+ advisors receive timely and accurate commission payments.
The ideal candidate thrives in a high-volume transaction environment and possesses the "white-glove" service mindset necessary to support our luxury real estate professionals.
Responsibilities- Daily Operations:
Supervise the day-to-day activities of the accounting team, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and the closing of real estate files. - Commission Management:
Oversee the calculation and distribution of complex agent commissions, ensuring accuracy across various split structures and franchise fee requirements. - Month-End Close:
Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, and the preparation of preliminary financial statements for the Controller’s review. - Trust Account Compliance:
Ensure all earnest money and trust account activities comply with Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE) regulations. - Audit Support:
Assist the Controller ensuring all documentation is organized and compliant with internal controls. - Advisor Support:
Act as the primary point of contact for Managing Brokers regarding commission questions and financial reporting. - Software Super-User:
Maintain expert-level knowledge of our accounting software (e.g., Brokerage Engine/Back Office and Quickbooks) and assist in training staff on system updates or new workflows.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. - Experience:
5–7 years of progressive accounting experience. Prior experience as a Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager is preferred. - Industry Knowledge:
Minimum 2 years of Residential Real Estate experience. You must understand the mechanics of a brokerage, specifically how residential closings flow from escrow to payout. - Technical
Skills:
Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables) and experience with real estate accounting software. - Attention to Detail:
An obsession with accuracy; in the luxury market, even a small error in an advisor's commission check can impact the firm's reputation for excellence. - Leadership:
Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
