Art Gallery Assistant

Overview

The Marshall Gallery is seeking an Art Gallery Assistant to support the daily operations of the gallery, ensuring a well-organized, visually polished, and welcoming environment. This role focuses on artwork inventory management, exhibition preparation, shipping/receiving, and general gallery maintenance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a creative, fast-paced environment.

• Artwork Handling & Installation:
  Assist with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions.
• Hang artwork securely and professionally according to gallery standards.
• Patch, paint, and prepare walls before and after exhibitions.
• Move, lift, and handle artwork with care, following proper art-handling protocols.
• Inventory & Documentation:
  Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records for all artwork.
• Label and track artwork using gallery systems and software.
• Photograph and document new artwork arrivals.
• Assist with condition reports, cataloging, and filing.
• Shipping & Receiving:
  Pack and unpack artwork with appropriate materials for safe transport.
• Coordinate domestic and international shipments with artists, collectors, and shippers.
• Inspect incoming artwork for damage and ensure proper documentation.
• Gallery Maintenance & Operations:
  Keep gallery spaces clean, organized, and visitor-ready.
• Patch, sand, and repaint walls as needed.
• Organize back-of-house storage areas and supplies.
• Monitor and order gallery supplies (tools, hardware, packing materials, cleaning products, etc.).

• Experience in art handling, installation, or gallery/museum work (preferred).
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Comfortable using basic hand tools and ladders; ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs.
• Basic knowledge of shipping procedures and packing best practices.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Professional, reliable, and comfortable working in an artistic setting.

• Flexible part-time schedule may vary depending on installation timelines and events.
• May require occasional evenings or weekends for openings and exhibition changes.
