Position: POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT (TRAINEE)

City of Scottsdale Police Officers are responsible for protecting life and property, preventing, deterring and investigating crime, enforcing laws and responding to citizen requests through the use of community policing strategies to engage and educate the community.

A Police Officer Recruit is an entry-level position prior to becoming a certified Police Officer. The recruit participates in formal, structured training at a police academy as well as customized departmental training classes and a field training program arranged by in‑service trainers.

The starting salary for a Police Officer Recruit (Trainee) is $36.93/hour ($76,814.40/Annual).

Salary progression:
The position is part of the Police Step Pay Plan. Successful completion of the police academy and promotional process allows promotion to the first step of the Police Officer Step Plan ($38.78/hour; $80,662.40/Annual), after which progression follows the anniversary date of the promotion based on performance.

Application Process

Education and Experience Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
  • Must be 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements
  • Unrestricted driver’s license with no major citations within the past 36 months. Out‑of‑state licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to Arizona.
  • AZPOST certification must be obtained and maintained.
  • All City of Scottsdale employees must reside in Arizona during active employment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform law enforcement patrol activities.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and observe, monitor, and enforce compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards and laws. Pursue and stop offenders, subdue resisting offenders with necessary force, including deadly force.
  • Issue citations, make arrests, search persons, places, and things; seize and impound property and evidence; transport arrested persons and property.
  • Mediates disputes; performs crowd and riot control activities.
  • Conduct law enforcement investigations.
  • Protect crime and traffic accident scenes; conduct face‑to‑face and phone interviews; observe, gather, record, process, and preserve evidence; measure and diagram scenes; prepare detailed written reports; enter data into a computerized records management system; present testimony and evidence in court.
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance with fires, accidents, and crime scenes; administer first aid; assist distressed motorists; direct traffic; move persons, vehicles, and property.
Pre‑employment Requirements
  • Pass a post‑offer drug screen before starting.
  • Pass an audiogram test.
  • Pass a visual/Ishihara screening test.
  • Pass the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) medical exam.
  • Pass a psychological evaluation.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously or sequentially.
  • Sit for extended periods while driving a city vehicle.
  • Physical agility to pursue offenders on foot; stop and subdue resisting offenders with necessary force.
  • Access various terrains; climb elevations.
  • Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, firearms, and unpleasant odors.
  • Lift and move up to 160 pounds over long distances.
  • Operate handguns, batons, and other law enforcement tools.
