The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership, direction, and management of the branch's hospice nursing services. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, compassionate, and compliant end-of-life care in accordance with Medicare Conditions of Participation, Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) regulations, and organizational policies. The DON provides clinical oversight, staff leadership, and strategic guidance to support hospice patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership & Oversight
  • Provide leadership and supervision for all hospice nursing staff, including RNs, LPNs, and clinical support personnel
  • Ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with hospice philosophy, standards of practice, and individualized plans of care
  • Oversee patient admissions, ongoing care, and discharges to ensure clinical appropriateness and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as a clinical resource and escalation point for complex patient care issues
Regulatory Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation, ADHS regulations, and ACHC accreditation standards
  • Oversee clinical documentation to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance
  • Support and respond to Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives
  • Participate in survey readiness, audits, and corrective action plans
  • Monitor clinical outcomes, infection control, and patient safety initiatives
Staff Management & Developments
  • Recruit, hire, orient, train, and evaluate nursing staff
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient needs
  • Support ongoing staff education, competency validation, and professional development
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, compassion, and excellence
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Collaborate with the hospice Medical Director, interdisciplinary group (IDG), and leadership team
  • Participate in IDG meetings and ensure nursing input into care planning
  • Support coordination of care with referral sources, facilities, and community partners
Operational & Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assist in budgeting, resource utilization, and supply management
  • Support census growth through efficient admissions and high-quality clinical care
  • Participate in on-call rotation or provide clinical backup as required
  • Support organizational policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives
Qualifications Required
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Arizona
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of hospice or end-of-life care experience
  • At least 2 years of nursing leadership or management experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation
Preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher
  • Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) or Certified Hospice Administrator (CHA)
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and hospice software systems
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Clinical expertise in hospice and palliative care
  • Ability to lead teams in a fast-paced, emotionally sensitive environment
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
  • Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to travel within the hospice service area
  • Ability to meet physical demands of clinical oversight and occasional patient care
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or on-call as needed
