Special Schools Para educator – Blades Elementary (Temporary 2025‑2026)
Job Purpose: Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the para educator assists certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and behavioral objectives.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other core skills.
- Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
- Assist professional staff in the administration of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
- Support classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
- Maintain record‑keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
- Hold classroom behavioral management duties to minimize disruptions, ensuring a safe and orderly environment.
- Assist students in non‑instructional areas such as supervising lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridors, and study hall.
- Accompany students on field trips for supervision purposes.
- Assist teachers with parent contact as requested to foster effective and participatory parent involvement.
- Assist students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion and achievement of IEP objectives.
- Provide support with activities of daily living for students with physical or mental disabilities to maximize participation in school activities.
- Follow all safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students.
- Assist in maintaining health and safety of orthopedically handicapped and medically fragile students.
- Assist with personal hygiene, toilet schedules, and changes of diapers or clothing as needed.
- Operate medical equipment such as oral suctioning, gastronomy, and orthopedic equipment.
- Assist students with severe eating problems and monitor self‑feeding students.
- Monitor and control student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.
- Attend periodic training and in‑services related to medical interventions and the instructional program.
- Assist students with braces, wheelchairs, and other orthopedic equipment.
- Assist with selected learning activities, including opening and closing books, adding or removing papers from notebooks.
- Assist students getting on and off the bus and accompany medically fragile students on the bus and field trips as assigned.
Additional Duties: Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Equipment and Travel: Use standard office equipment (personal computer, copier). Medical devices may be used as needed by students. Travel between schools or between schools and offices may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.
- Proficiency in personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Confidentiality regarding student and employee information.
- Develop supportive relationships with students with special needs.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.
- Report work orally or in writing to the supervisor.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Additional Occupational Health Specific Abilities:
- Assist teachers in responding to student emergencies.
- Assist in toileting and feeding students with special needs.
- Learn and perform medical intervention techniques including gastronomy feeding, catheterization, and oral suctioning.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Assist in lifting students and equipment, including fully grown students.
Physical and Mental Demands: Works in standard office and school building environments; may work outdoors during student activities.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college‑level coursework (60 credit hours) OR passing the Para Pro Assessment.
