Overview

Job Title: Staff Accountant IV – Construction

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Project Accounting and Financial Reporting:
    Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including Work in Progress (WIP) reports; conduct detailed financial analysis of project costs, identifying trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting:
    Maintain financial forecasts.
  • Compliance and Internal Controls:
    Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and relevant construction industry regulations; maintain and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy; support corporate personnel with external and internal audits, addressing issues promptly.
  • Reconciliations:
    Perform and oversee monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts, including bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, and accounts payable; work with accounting team to resolve discrepancies and maintain audit-ready records.
  • Journal Entries:
    Prepare accrual, expense allocation, inter-company, and other miscellaneous journal entries monthly; ensure entries are properly documented and supported.
  • Equipment and Fixed Asset Management:
    Maintain fixed asset registers, track acquisition/depreciation/disposal, coordinate with operations for tagging and physical tracking, conduct periodic inventory checks, and prepare asset-related reports for financial statements.
  • Licensing and Permits:
    Assist with accounting aspects of obtaining and maintaining licenses for construction projects.
  • Cash Receipts and Intercompany Invoicing:
    Post cash receipts daily; prepare and process monthly intercompany invoices and reconcile between entities.
  • Consolidation and Financial Statements:
    Perform consolidation for two entities; prepare consolidated financial statements with eliminations and adjustments as needed.
  • Banking:
    Manage banking activities, including account reconciliations and deposits/withdrawals.
  • Tax Preparation and Reporting:
    Compute and prepare city, state, county, and property taxes; prepare and submit quarterly and annual tax reports with detailed records for audits.
  • Team Leadership and Development:
    Lead and mentor junior accounting staff; foster a collaborative and high-performance environment.
  • Systems and Process Improvement:
    Assist in implementing new accounting software/tools; provide training and support to team members; perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Broad experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Excel skills; proficiency in Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate and other financial tools.
  • Strong ethics, integrity, and commitment to accuracy and compliance.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in the construction industry.
  • Proficiency in Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, Vista by Viewpoint, Microsoft Office applications, and financial reporting tools.
  • In-depth understanding of construction accounting principles, job costing, WIP reporting, prevailing wage laws, licensing requirements, tax preparation, and consolidation processes.
