DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization working to help people with the complex needs of homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness achieve their highest potential for health and well-being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. Our vision is a community where no person is abandoned, ignored, or experiencing homelessness. DESC serves almost 3,000 people each day, providing integrated services to secure and maintain safe and affordable housing.
JobDefinition
Staff provide administrative support during staffing gaps on the team for PTO, meetings, training, job transition, special projects, or other capacity needs. Shifts are at 515 3rd Ave and 216 James St. Offices, sometimes split between locations. The position may also pick up open shifts at housing projects, after approval and training. Must pick up a minimum of 4 shifts per month.
Requires building skills in client engagement and, when needed, de‑escalation of clients.
- Front Desk & Lobby – Arrive prompt, prepare schedules, printouts, intake info; cover 9 am–5 pm; greet visitors and thank clients; provide information on services; orient visitors to resources; maintain lobby cleanliness; intervene when needed; provide breaks; de‑escalate behavioral health clients as required.
- Phones/Mail/Office Supplies – Answer calls promptly, route, take messages; process mail; order and dispense office supplies.
- Paperwork – Update resource lists, client service records; write logs, track attendance, supplies, end‑of‑day reports; track vehicles; manage Outlook reservation calendar; organize and file data‑entered documents.
- Special Projects – Inventory, filing, copying and other organization tasks; participate in staff meetings and trainings; perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Excellent typing and keyboard skills; clerical experience.
- Computer skills: data entry, word processing.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility and cooperative teamwork.
- Initiative and creativity in problem solving and system development.
- Attention to detail.
- Effective communication with diverse staff.
- Ability to relate to clients with challenging behaviors.
- Commitment to cooperation, collaboration, continuity across programs.
- Support people’s self‑determination with impartiality and respect for strengths.
- Provide equitable services without bias.
Requires sitting, communicating with others, lifting and carrying items up to 40 lb; operating computer hardware; requires close, distance, color, peripheral, depth vision and ability to adjust focus.
