DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: HOMEWORK CENTER / YOUTH
POSITION TITLE: ACADEMIC MENTOR
STATUS: REGULAR / NON-EXEMPT - PART-TIME
COMPENSATION: $22.00 PER HOUR
DIRECT SUPERVISOR: EDUCATION & YOUTH ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR
UNIT: SEATTLE WHITE CENTER CORPS

FUNCTION OF POSITION
As an Academic Mentor, you will work to assist with developing and implementing relational programs for children, youth, and their families. Work to prepare vibrant, academically strong, and socially skilled students who are ready to flourish in life.
SCHEDULE
Monday - Friday with occasional evenings, weekends, holidays. Hours are subject to change during the summer.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
A High School diploma or GED completion is required.Ability to read and write clearly in English.Working with children in an educational environment.Knowledgeable of basic math, reading, and writing skills.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Must be able to walk 1 mile to and from our local school for pickups daily.Drive a bus van to pick up students. Maintain a daily transportation log indicating students who are being transported.Build and maintain relationships with children/youth/families.Establish and maintain good communication relationships with Seattle White Center staff.Tutor youth in a variety of subjects including math, science, history, and reading.Assist with snacks, washing dishes, emptying trash, and any other cleanup duties requested by supervisor.Assist in the management of the learning environment, helping to keep noise levels to a minimum and students engaged in the Center's activities.Plan and implement curriculum and activities as needed.Plan and implement family events.Maintain appropriate records and documentation concerning volunteers as needed.Monitor if children are working on homework and that all homework is complete and correct, consulting with the Education Director regarding students who are not meeting this expectation.Help with clean up.Monitor children in hallways, classrooms, computer lab, and any other spaces where children may be present.Help/lead or assist with youth programs i.e. Troops, music, and any other programs.Assist with Family Nights.Any other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to quickly learn and apply new information/skills.Experience with tutoring multiple age groups.Ability to demonstrate leadership abilitys.Understanding and appreciation of children.Possess or obtain within 90 days of hire a current Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate card.Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check.WA State Food Worker's Card must be attained within one month of employment.Willingness to serve a diverse population.Sensitivity to and understanding of the comprehensive mission of The Salvation Army.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Self‑motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.Ability to work in a challenging environment and maintain poise under pressure.Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.Ability to work with diverse age groups.Ability to de‑escalate confrontational situations.SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS
Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook (email and calendar).Data Entry – able to learn skills required to enter clients.Knowledgeable of basic internet skills.QUALIFICATIONS
