Education and Activities Coordinator – The Salvation Army Southern California

Department: Community Center
Status: Regular Full‑Time/Non‑Exempt
Direct Supervisor: Operations Manager

Position Overview

The Salvation Army is a Christian organization dedicated to spiritual regeneration. This role focuses on leading educational and youth activities for children and families within the community center.

Key Responsibilities Administrative Duties
  • Schedule and conduct quarterly program planning and evaluation meetings with staff and volunteers for all educational programs.
  • Recruit and train volunteers for educational programs.
  • Keep management aware of all educational programs in a timely manner.
Program Development
  • Plan activities, curriculum, calendar, and individual learning plans.
  • Coordinate the after‑school center’s use of facilities with the Community Center Director.
  • Secure supplies through budget and purchase order policy.
  • Develop and distribute program information and public‑relations materials, obtaining permission before release.
  • Perform any other program‑related tasks required by Corps Officers.
Business Details
  • Maintain enrollment records for each student.
  • Submit weekly statistics and monthly summaries to Corps Officers before the first Monday of each month.
  • Coordinate vehicle needs with Officers and Operations Manager.
  • Manage business items for after‑school, camp, and computer learning center programs.
  • Ensure parents complete “Minor Participation Authorization and Waiver” for off‑site activities.
  • Create safety plans for off‑site activities.
  • Conduct annual employee reviews and document incidents within 24 hours.
  • Adhere to all minor and vulnerable adult safety policies.
Driving Details
  • Create routes for after‑school, summer camp, and other programs.
  • Operate a minibus and minivan as required.
  • Coordinate vehicle needs with Officers, Operations Manager, or Director.
  • Ensure occupants are securely seated with seatbelts.
  • Ensure passenger limits are respected.
  • Ensure children’s vehicles are operated with at least two adults, one trained in PTM (“Protect the Mission”).
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
  • Prepare the facility for after‑school programs by 2:00 p.m. and store materials after 5:00 p.m.
  • Maintain bulletin boards, posters, and pictures for after‑school programs.
  • Maintain all areas used by the program.
  • Notify Property and Maintenance Technician of repairs or janitorial needs.
Day Camp Responsibilities
  • Oversee registration and staff scheduling.
  • Organize and run field trips and educational activities.
  • Set up the summer sack lunch program and keep statistics.
  • Supervise day camp staff, including orientation.
  • Interview and assist in selecting temporary staff.
  • Produce flyers and mailings for the holiday center, day camp, and computer learning center.
  • Create safety plans for off‑site trips.
Computer Learning Center Responsibilities
  • Oversee scheduling, programming, and equipment security.
  • Notify Property and Maintenance Technician of repairs or janitorial needs.
  • Plan curriculum, including software and websites.
Christmas Responsibilities
  • Assist with kettle driving, pick‑up, and drop‑off of workers.
  • Assist with Christmas assistance sign‑ups when needed.
Education & Experience
  • HS Diploma or GED required; some college or degree preferred.
  • Five years of teaching or working with children in an educational environment.
  • Experience with tutoring and planning/scheduling strongly recommended.
  • Ability to read and write clearly in English.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age 21 and currently possess a Washington State driver’s license.
  • Clear Motor Vehicle Records check.
  • Walk 1 mile to and from the local school for daily pickups.
  • Comply with child protection policies and understand the Salvation Army’s mission.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate work of subordinates.
  • Work independently or with staff members.
  • Maintain composure in demanding situations.
  • Hold CPR/first aid and current CPR certification.
  • Experience supervising volunteers or employees.
  • Demonstrate leadership, love and appreciation for children.
  • Prepare and manage monthly and annual budgets under supervisor guidance.
  • Supervise academic mentors, schedule duty assignments, and provide training.
