Title:

Preservation & Museum Specialist 1 (NE H NI SEIU 925 Non Supv)) are responsible for the delivery of a variety of educational programs designed for groups of PreK-12th grade students and for family audiences who visit the museum. Museum Educators play a key role in fostering a welcoming environment for these youth and family audiences. Program content areas include earth science, life science, and Native American cultures of the Pacific Northwest, highlighting Burke collections and research.

This position may also support the revamping of programs featuring science and Heritage Arts and Cultures collections represented at the museum, including but not limited to: the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. The Burke Museum Education Department is committed to making the natural world and globally-influenced cultural heritage of Washington State accessible to all learners. We aim to foster and support empathy, curiosity, and a life-long love of learning.
** Basic Functions:
*** Present facilitated field trip programs and virtual programs at the museum to groups of PreK-12th grade students and their teachers and chaperones;
* Support and facilitate educational experiences for youth and family audiences, including family programs and events, summer & break camps;
* Assist with program preparation and logistics to ensure successful program delivery, including: set up and break down of materials before and after program facilitation, restocking consumable materials, pre-visit preparation & support for clients, and greeting/orienting groups to the museum upon arrival;
* Assist with maintenance of teaching collections and program materials for both facilitated and self-directed programming;
* Work with the Museum Field Trip Programs Manager, Youth and Family Programs Manager, and other Education staff to develop activities and hands-on materials for educational programs as needed;
* Provide support for Burke Boxes and facilitate offsite outreach programs as needed;
* Observe education programs offered by the Burke in order to gain a thorough understanding of the work of Burke Education and develop/grow your teaching practice;
* Provide excellent customer service to all Burke Education clients;
* Other duties as assigned.
** MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
** Positions require satisfactory completion of two years of college work in history, English, education, fine arts, art history, anthropology, archaeology, or museology and two years experience working with museum collections, exhibits, artifacts, preservation, acquisition or restoration.
* Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
*** DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
*** Must be able to work a flexible schedule that occasionally involves work on weekends, evenings and holidays;
* High degree of flexibility, initiative, and ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
* Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, and the ability to work with diverse audiences and multiple learning styles;
* Experience working with youth (Pre-K – 12th grade) in a formal or informal education setting;
* Experience working with the public in customer service capacity;
* First Aid/CPR Certification;
* Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop.

*** Able to work in an environment visible to the public with visual and audible distractions;
* Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds alone and up to 60 pounds with assistance;
* Wear required credentials at all times and work attire/uniforms and name tags as required by position;
* Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
