Do you love working with kids of all ages? We are looking for candidates who have a strong passion to work with elementary and middle school age kids this summer.

In this position, you will develop and implement programs for youth and lead our summer camp program sites. You will have the opportunity to positively shape young minds and meet their social and emotional needs by providing structured programs that build a strong foundation for future success.

Shifts: Typical schedule is six to eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, anytime between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Candidates must be flexible to work limited days and times to accommodate program needs.

Schedule: Intermittent hours: 0–40 hours per week, depending upon participant enrollment for the week. Timeframe:
June 17 – August 30. Position open until filled.

General Position Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leader III will assist in the planning and implementation of assigned programs, provide direct leadership and serve as the on‑site lead staff person.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and implement assigned programs.
  • Recommend new components for assigned programs based on participant and parent input, research, and trends.
  • Provide inspired and enthusiastic leadership, support, and mentoring on‑site for program participants.
  • Support and model the identified vision, values, and behaviors of the organization.
  • Serve as lead staff for assigned programs.
  • Take the lead in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating program part‑time staff and volunteers.
  • Prepare staff and volunteer work schedules.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants, parents, co‑workers, school staff, and the general public.
  • Monitor participants’ behavior to assure a positive and safe program environment.
  • Provide transportation using City van for after‑school and trip programs.
  • Set up and take down rooms for program implementation; provide facility clean‑up as needed.
  • Submit weekly reports.
  • Complete facility and/or vehicle safety checks prior to each program occurrence.
  • Check school facility condition following programs held on school sites.
  • Assist with marketing of programs.
  • Deliver and distribute program‑related promotional materials.
  • Conduct program evaluations and/or related participant quality assurance measures.
  • Administer First Aid/CPR for minor injuries; follow Department procedures for all accidents and incidents.
  • Maintain inventory, demonstrate safe use, and recommend purchase of program supplies.
  • Operate appropriate office equipment.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing to a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Monitor budget and expenditures for assigned programs.
  • Research, recruit, and coordinate community partners to supplement programs.
  • Coordinate registration and payments with City of Burien Customer Service Representatives.
  • Develop content, schedules, and lead regular intermittent staff meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Secondary Functions
  • Assist participants with program registration requests.
  • Assist Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department staff with special events as needed.
  • Attend training workshops as required.
  • Serve on and participate in various employee committees.
Education and Experience

One year of experience leading or teaching youth programs, with one year of college coursework in Recreation, Education, and/or related field. Any equivalent combination of education, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which would allow an individual to perform the duties of the position will be considered. Bilingual preferred.

Special Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment background check.
  • Valid First Aid and Child and Adult CPR Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Applicants age 21 and over may be required to provide transportation for participants using the City van; if so, a valid Washington driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record will be required.
  • Ability to obtain a public health department food handler’s permit might be required.
