Position Description

The Biological Sciences Department of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) invites applications for a tenure‑track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full‑time (100% FTE) basis for a nine‑month academic year appointment beginning September 16, 2026.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. Tenure‑track faculty at our primarily undergraduate institution typically teach 5 courses per academic year, spread across 3 quarters.

The base salary range for this position will be $10,670–$11,231 per month during the nine‑month academic year ($96,030–$101,079 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Candidates will be considered across a broad range of research and teaching interests in biology. Our current needs are greatest in Immunology, Physiology, Development, or Metabolism, using a variety of study systems. Applicants whose interest in these areas also intersect with ecology or evolution are especially encouraged to apply. The Biological Sciences Department at UW Bothell is unable to support research that requires the use of vertebrate animal facilities.

Field work on vertebrates may be of interest, but we are unable to support research that requires any use of vertebrates in the lab.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Engage in excellent teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate level, supporting learning for student populations with diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences.
  • Teach undergraduate courses in your area of expertise, including Investigative Biology.
  • Contribute to teaching the Introductory Biology series to support the retention of our diverse student pool in Biology.
  • Propose and develop an active research program involving undergraduates in Immunology, Physiology, Development, or Metabolism.
  • Apply for extramural funding to support the research program.
  • Service includes contributing to the development of the biology degree program and participation in departmental, school, and university committee work.
About the Department of Biological Sciences, the School of STEM, and UW Bothell

The department of Biological Sciences is a vibrant and growing community comprised of twelve full‑time faculty. Our biology major was established in 2010 and graduates approximately 200 undergraduate students each year. Each of our undergraduates participates in research, either within a faculty member’s research program, through an internship, or in the Investigative Biology course. The Biological Sciences faculty have recently moved into Innovation Hall, which is a new building including new labs, and facilities for plants, microbiology, molecular biology, and cell culture.

We do not have vertebrate animal facilities on campus. The campus also has a 1,600‑sq‑ft greenhouse adjacent to a 52‑acre restored wetland on campus; and a new environmental education center ards State Park (EERC), all of which contribute to our mission of high‑quality undergraduate education and research. We believe students learn biology best by engaging in the scientific process, and we are committed to teaching practices that foster learning in students from a variety of backgrounds, including students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in science.

The School of STEM is the largest school at UW Bothell. We are committed to attracting faculty and staff with diverse perspectives and experiences that allow them, as a whole, to create an exceptional student experience in support of our core values:
Collaboration, Opportunities, Responsibility, and Engagement. Our faculty members are dynamic educators who engage in innovative, evidence‑based pedagogies. Nearly every tenure‑track and many teaching‑track School of STEM faculty members engage undergraduate students as research collaborators. We pride ourselves on our community‑engaged teaching and…
