Assistant Professor in Phonology

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Phonology, with an anticipated start date of September 2027. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a nine-month academic appointment with a 3 year renewable term.

The base salary range for this position will be $7,079 - $10,600 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The Linguistics Department hosts a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to the study of language as a natural phenomenon. The Department has 19 faculty members, 142 undergraduate majors, 25 PhD students, 87 MS students and a sizable number of ASL and Linguistics minors.

All University of Washington faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research, and service.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Applications are encouraged from scholars specializing in phonology whose research complements and builds on the existing strengths of our department. We especially encourage applications from scholars who work on languages other than English (including signed languages, endangered or under-studied languages, and stigmatized linguistic varieties), employ laboratory-based approaches, and/or conduct fieldwork. Successful candidates will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, conduct independent research, and supervise student research.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in Linguistics or a related field, in hand by the end of July 2027.

Priority will be given to applications received by December 15, 2026. Applications will only be accepted via Interfolio. The position will remain open until filled.

Applications should include the following materials:

  • Cover letter of no more than 1 page detailing your interest in the position, relevant qualifications, and experience
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research statement of no more than 2 pages
  • Teaching statement of no more than 2 pages
  • Two sample publications
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Applicants should articulate how their past experiences and/or future plans in research, teaching, mentoring, and/or service promote a sense of belonging and foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
