Maintain, clean, monitor, & repair engines, electric motors, pumps, winches, or other mechanical or electrical equipment in the vessel.

Golden Alaska Seafoods operates the MV Golden Alaska, a 305’ mothership seafood processor that operates in the Bering Sea pollock fishery and Pacific Whiting fishery off the US West Coast.

The MV Golden Alaska has an open recruitment for a member of the Engine Department in the position of Oiler. Oilers serve as assistants to the 2nd Engineer, 1st Engineer, and Chief Engineer.

For most people, living and working aboard a processing ship is very different from any other situation you will likely encounter and brings challenges on a daily basis. At the height of A Season and B Season it takes the full efforts and resources of over 130 people to keep up with the steady supply of incoming fish and to maintain 24-hour production.

This means demanding, long hours for everyone, constant noise, cramped quarters with little or no privacy, fatigue, physical discomfort and boredom. Don’t come aboard the vessel with adventurous notions of life  reality, life at sea is often dull and uncomfortable. It certainly is not an experience for everyone.

Skill and Experience Required
  • Must have basic knowledge of machine design, use, maintenance, and repair
  • 1+ years of experience in identifying and troubleshooting problems with fishing vessel engines/machinery preferred
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with other Engine Room crew members
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain or repair engines, electric motors, pumps, winches, or other mechanical or electrical equipment, or assist other crew members with maintenance or repair duties
  • Monitor engine, machinery, or equipment indicators when the vessel is underway, and report abnormalities to appropriate shipboard staff
  • Maintain records of engineering department activities, including machine operations
  • Maintain electrical power, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, or sewerage systems
  • Monitor and test operations of engines or other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified
  • Monitor the availability, use, or condition of pollution preventatives to ensure that international regulations are followed
  • Note and record gauge readings or test data, such as revolutions per minute or voltage output, in engineering logs
  • Clean engine parts and keep engine rooms clean
  • Perform or participate in emergency drills, as required
Physical Ability
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangplank or using a Jacob’s ladder
  • Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment and random drug tests
  • Ability to work at sea for extended periods of time
Work Schedule

12 hours 7 days a week for 3-5 months
