At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
As part of a high functioning, cross-functional team, you will be responsible for the materials and processing (M&P) of fluids systems for an advanced upper stage of the New Glenn rocket. This includes review and approval of drawings for both in house and off the shelf components as well as project work such as developing processes and characterizing material properties and allowables.
You will be applying your experience in both metallic (e.g. casting, forming, extrusion, plating, corrosion, coating, brazing, anodization, welding, passivation) and non-metallic materials (e.g., O-rings, seals, bushings, lubricants), contributing greatly to our team as we mature this stage into a production vehicle.
Our best team members are flexible in constantly evolving environments, collaborative, detail oriented, and hard working. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight! Passion for our mission and vision is required.
Candidates with higher Levels of experience are welcome to apply!
This is a Fixed Term role with an end date of December 31, 2026.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Work with cross-functional team on material selections, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce aerospace hardware.
- Review and approve drawings for conformance to the New Glenn Parts, Materials and Process Plan (ensuring proper selection and definition of materials and processes)
- Own material characterization of physical properties and allowables as needed.
- Support the development of processes culminating in the drawing definition of the process and inspection requirements.
- As the program progresses to the production phase, M&P support of component non-conformances will be required on an as needed basis.
- Bachelor of Science in Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Chemical, Aerospace Engineering or relevant field from ABET accredited school.
- 3+ years experience with materials and processes used in the aerospace industry.
- Experience with design for manufacturing and engineering drawing review.
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to learn, grow and tackle new challenges in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent attention to detail and task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.
- Ability to work harmoniously with cross-functional teams across large geographic distances.
- Experience with aircraft, launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development.
- Experience with materials in extreme environments (i.e., cryogenic temperatures, pure oxygen)
- Experience with a variety of metallic and nonmetallic material manufacturing technologies
- Experience with evaluating low cycle and high cycle fatigue performance of materials.
- Experience working with product lifecycle management (PLM) software, including release and approval processes.
