Overview

Welding Engineer III role at Blue Origin
. This role is part of the New Shepard program, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line. The team works on material problems for spaceflight systems, reviews production drawings for large complex assemblies, develops processes, selects materials, and defines design requirements. We collaborate with quality, design, structures, thermal, integration, and manufacturing to optimize designs and processes.

The team manages welding and metallic experience across the New Shepard program, offering opportunities to gain and share experiences across the organization. The environment values flexibility, thoroughness, detail-orientation, and passion for the mission.

We are looking for someone to apply technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, release, and maintain welding process documentation.
  • Support procurement activities to support vehicle build schedules.
  • Support integrated test objectives, data review, and reporting.
  • Participate in subsystem level testing including planning, execution, data reduction and analysis.
  • Work with multi-functional teams across multiple sites including design, analysis, materials, processes, structures, fluids, systems, procurement, and manufacturing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree or higher in mechanical, structural, or other relevant engineering field.
  • 5+ years in professional engineering experience.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials.
  • Experience with large primary or secondary structures.
  • Experience with material selection, compatibility, and metallic manufacturing techniques and product forms (e.g., sheet metal, machining).
  • Familiarity with tolerance, GD&T, and design for manufacturability.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware on the production floor and/or in service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with aluminum welding methods including friction stir welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
  • Ability to work independently, driving engineering from conceptual to released engineering and flight hardware.
  • Experience designing for manufacturability and value engineering, with focus on cost reduction and build time optimization.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project or another equivalent schedule software.
  • Familiarity with budget management.
  • Experience in risk management and consolidation of technical data for presentation to senior leadership.
