Application Close Date: Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems.

Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will identify materials and processes to increase manufacturability of liquid rocket engine hardware. You’ll develop these materials and processes and qualify them for use on production hardware, ensuring all performance requirements will be met after exposure to the range of extreme environments inherent in liquid rocket engines. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and requires a dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities
  • Interpret production drawings systematically, understanding the need for processes to meet established requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external material qualification and process development activities.
  • Identify low maturity technologies to improve technical performance or manufacturability of liquid rocket engines.
  • Define material and/or process development and qualification plans in order to utilize novel materials and processes on liquid rocket engine hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, and quality engineers to disposition nonconforming hardware.
  • Identify root causes of nonconforming hardware and work proactively to identify and implement corrective actions.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to lower cost and production time while maintaining technical requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment to achieve desired surface finishes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2+ years directly related materials and processes experience.
  • Minimum B.S. in Material Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes.
  • Familiarity with standard methods of manufacturing such as welding, brazing, precision cleaning, mechanical fastening, and coating application.
  • Understanding of aerospace manufacturing and quality management systems.
  • Strong written and personal computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in Material Science/Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in the production, manufacturing, and assembly of rocket propulsion hardware.
  • Experience and working knowledge of design and function of liquid rocket engine propulsion assemblies and components.
  • Experience with a variety of cleaning methods (e.g., ultrasonic, solvent, aqueous) and surface finishing techniques (e.g., plating, painting, coating).
  • Demonstrated experience (M&P signatory authority) on a flight production program.
  • Deep technical understanding of surface chemistry, polymeric materials, or metal forming processes.
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids, including oxygen compatibility and hydrogen compatibility.
  • Experience with aerospace quality management systems supporting propulsion hardware.
