Job Title:
Underground (UG) Distribution Engineers & Designers
Location:
Seattle, Washington –98104//Remote, once new office opens-Hybrid
Duration: 6 months Contract, Extension
Job Description:
Client is seeking Underground (UG) Distribution Engineers & Designers who are passionate about electric utility design engineering, with a particular focus on underground electrical distribution systems.
We're looking for individuals with experience designing underground electric utility infrastructure, including cable and conduit systems, duct banks, underground service connections, and complex urban distribution projects. You'll work directly with utility clients to develop high-quality, constructible engineering designs that meet applicable industry standards and customer requirements.
If you join us in this role, you'll have the opportunity to expand your expertise in underground distribution design, including NESC standards, cable sizing and pulling calculations, conduit and duct bank configurations, GIS-based design, utility coordination, field data collection, and client-specific engineering standards.
As an Underground Distribution Engineer / Designer, you can expect to:
• Perform design engineering for underground electrical distribution projects supporting client electric utility customers.
• Develop detailed underground distribution design packages, including underground (UG), underground residential distribution (URD), cable and conduit systems, duct banks, and underground service installations.
• Design underground electrical infrastructure for new construction, system upgrades, relocations, and customer service connections.
• Develop engineering drawings, material specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and construction work packages using customer GIS, CAD, and work management systems.
• Perform underground distribution design calculations, including cable sizing, voltage drop, cable pulling tensions, conduit fill, electrical demand, and fault current calculations.
• Coordinate with utility clients, municipalities, contractors, and other stakeholders to address existing underground infrastructure, utility conflicts, and construction requirements.
• Support the design of complex underground cable and conduit projects in dense urban environments, including utility crossings, equipment placement, and constructability considerations.
• Assist with permitting, easements, right-of-way (ROW) requirements, and other documentation necessary for underground utility construction.
• Utilize customer GIS and work management systems such as ArcGIS, Small world, EFD, AUD, Infor, EAM, STORMS, and Maximo.
• Manage assigned project scope, schedules, and budgets while maintaining client priorities and quality standards.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering workflows, design processes, and the overall quality of client deliverables.
• Conduct local or regional field visits to collect site information, verify existing underground facilities, and support the development of accurate engineering work packages.
What Sets You Apart (Background Requirements):
• 2+ years of relevant electric utility distribution design experience, preferably with a focus on underground (UG) distribution systems.
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering preferred; additional relevant experience or certifications may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree.
• Experience designing underground electrical distribution facilities, including cable, conduit, duct banks, and underground service connections.
• Knowledge of underground distribution construction practices, utility design standards, and applicable National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements.
• Familiarity with underground distribution design calculations, such as cable sizing, conduit fill, cable pulling tensions, voltage drop, and electrical load calculations.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, utility maps, construction specifications, and existing utility infrastructure.
