JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Tax Manager is responsible for providing tax and consulting services to business clients with pass-through entities and to their business owners.

Job Summary

The Senior Tax Manager delivers tax planning, preparation, research, and compliance services for pass-through entities (S-corps, LLCs, Partnerships) and their owners’ individual returns, including estates, trusts, and charitable entities. The role involves client engagement management, supervising staff, ensuring timely, high-quality work, staying current with tax developments, and maintaining compliance with firm policies.

Job Duties
  • Performs tax planning, preparation and research for pass-through entities and the business owners’ individual returns, which may include estates, trusts and charitable entities.
  • Manages client engagements, supervises and reviews work of team staff members, and works closely with clients as well as internal managers and partners.
  • Contributes to client satisfaction by providing timely services and high‑quality work product.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of tax concepts and actively pursues increased tax knowledge through client assignments and current tax developments.
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens and ensuring self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").
    • Possesses significant knowledge of taxation related to personal income, estate and gift tax, wealth retention strategies, and taxation of entities owned by business owners (partnership and corporate taxation).
    • Conducts top‑level review of tax returns and resolves all tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate.
    • Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures to be performed, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred versus budget with assistance of Senior, timely billing (including management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client), timely collection of accounts receivable, managing client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project, and providing advice to clients in a timely manner.
  • Research
    • Identifies when research is needed, performs such research, and clearly and concisely reports the analysis.
    • Applies firm and professional standards for the preparation of WTA and tax returns.
    • Involves firm specialists when appropriate.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non‑tax benefits.
    • Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.
    • Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on how to improve processes and methods.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Builds a team of professionals by training and working together to serve high‑net‑worth clients with timely responses to their needs.
  • Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
  • Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
  • Trains associates and seniors on the use of all current software tools.
  • Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
  • Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
  • Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Education

Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred.

Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
