has been retained to identify the incoming Vice President of Finance on behalf of our client, Akin, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and families across Washington state strengthen and grow together. Akin accomplishes this mission by building a brighter future together, rooted in family.

The Vice President of Finance will be a strategic thought-partner with a strong business acumen who leads and develops an internal team to optimize financial operations in support of Akin and its affiliates. This includes strategy, finance, business planning, and budgeting. This full-time, hybrid opportunity is located in Seattle, Washington.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Vice President of Finance is responsible for identifying new opportunities to improve efficiency and respond proactively to other departments’ needs. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), they will work closely with senior management to address critical financial planning areas and issues, streamline current systems, and leverage new information technology.

Overseeing a team of up to 5 direct reports, the Vice President of Finance will have ownership over the analysis of existing strategies, processes, and systems. This position will also have, as necessary, access to paper and electronic protected healthcare information (PHI) and confidential identifiable information (CII) to perform related job duties and responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy, Vision, and Leadership
  • Advise the CFO and other key members of senior management on financial planning budgeting and long-term planning.
  • Devise and implement financial strategies aligned with Akin’s strategic goals.
  • Provide strategic financial counsel to the CFO and other senior management.
  • Contribute to the development of Akin’s strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization.

Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CFO informed of all critical issues.

Finance
  • Oversee the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team and Akin’s Board abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Lead the capital budget process, engaging Facilities and other key stakeholders to ensure capital projects are funded.
  • Own the financial management of grants and contracts, including monitoring revenue billing and related accounts receivable and ensuring compliance with financial reporting requirements.
  • Develop and monitor key financial performance indicators in conjunction with senior leadership.
  • Supervise the planning, development, and ongoing monitoring of Akin’s short-, mid-, and long-term forecasting and position control.

Create financial models as needed to assess the financial impact of strategic decisions.

Team Leadership
  • Build, develop, and lead a high-performing finance team.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the finance department.
  • Provide performance management, reviews and goal setting for finance team.

Manage workload issues effectively to create a workplace that increases employee retention and strengthens communication within and outside the department.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a finance-related field required; CPA and / or MBA strongly preferred.
  • 6+ years of broad financial and operational management experience.
  • 6 years of progressive leadership experience managing, developing, and coaching teams.
  • Experience in nonprofit, human services, or other mission-driven organizations preferred.
