Corrections Deputy - Lateral - Civil Service

We are looking for a Corrections Deputy to monitor, supervise and maintain custody of inmates in the Snohomish County Jail, the residential work release facility, and those placed into non‑custody community corrections programs.

Base pay range
: $76,241.88/yr – $/yr

Job Duties
  • Book inmates into the jail, work release or community corrections programs; conduct interview to determine medical, other special needs, and acceptability to book; assist in entering booking information into the jail computer system; conduct personal (pat down, strip searches) and property searches; take fingerprints and prepare for submission to AFIS, WASIC and FBI.
  • Supervise the activities of inmates within the jail housing areas and their movement from one area to another; supervise and document food services; supervise inmates in cleanup and maintenance activities; verify need and make arrangements for medical and health care; monitor use of prescribed medications; monitor recreational, educational and visitation activities; answer phone calls and provide information to authorized persons.
  • When assigned to community corrections, check for outstanding warrants and criminal history using various criminal‑justice databases; monitor inmates released to and returned from work, education and treatment programs; verify that work‑release inmates and program participants are where they are authorized to be through various forms of documentation or phone contact; and monitor electronic equipment for inmates on Home Detention and report all breaches of conditions.
  • Supervise the preparation of inmates for transportation to courts and other inmate appointments.
  • Conduct regular security checks; screen and search visitors; conduct periodic headcounts and searches of inmates and the areas accessible to them to prevent contraband; administer or arrange for breathalyzer or urinalysis.
  • Instruct inmates on jail rules and procedures; investigate suspected rule violations; take informal action to correct inmate behavior as appropriate; write violation reports; participate in inmate disciplinary proceedings; arrange for transfer of work‑release inmates returned to the maximum‑security jail by disciplinary board or other authority.

Job Duties
  • Maintain custody and control of inmates when confined to hospitals or other facilities as required; coordinate with courts to ensure scheduled appearances.
  • Serve on various committees such as training, safety, classification, wellness, wear and tear, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and others.
  • May be assigned temporary assignment as training officer or instructor.
  • When assigned to community corrections, conduct a thorough orientation explaining program procedures and rules; answer questions; work with staff to develop intervention for inmates with family, employment or emotional problems.
  • Provide direct one‑on‑one or group assistance to work‑release inmates and program participants as needed.
  • Maintain court and other documents related to work‑release inmates; handle cash for inmates; respond to information requests per office policy.
  • Assist in risk/needs assessment of inmates and contribute to case reviews and program placement.
  • Provide medication delivery and administration per RCW 70.48.490.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

No previous experience is required for entry‑level Corrections Deputy.

Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Candidates must be at least eighteen (18) years old at time of application, no maximum age.

Must be a United States citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a deferred action for childhood arrival (DACA) recipient as per RCW 41.14.100; must pass job‑related tests.
