Join the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Deputy, a crucial role responsible for the care and custody of adult prisoners and maintaining order in a maximum‑security facility.
Base Pay Range$35.81/hr - $46.38/hr
Responsibilities- Monitor and control inmate activities, both individually and in groups.
- Supervise inmates during feeding, visitation, recreation, counseling, and work assignments.
- Use independent judgment to take emergency action, including verbal de‑escalation and use of force.
- Take informal corrective action for inmate behavior as needed.
- Conduct security checks and maintain facility security.
- Write required reports and documentation of activities.
- Investigate suspected rule violations.
- Perform booking, searching, and release of prisoners, including paperwork.
- Answer telephone calls and monitor jail access and egress.
- Operate office and communications equipment, computers, and automated systems.
- Communicate effectively with people of all backgrounds.
- Perform all duties in a confined, high‑security environment and on all required shifts.
- When authorized, carry arms while transporting prisoners or on assigned duties.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
- At least 20 years old at time of appointment.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license.
- United States citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or DACA recipient;
English proficiency. - Pass Washington State Criminal Justice Commission physical fitness requirements.
- Complete a thorough background investigation.
- Complete the Corrections Academy or Equivalency Academy.
- Score at least 65% on the written exam and pass the physical abilities test.
Applicants must achieve a 65% written exam score and pass the physical abilities test. Successful candidates will be invited to complete the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office application and will be placed on a civil service register. The hiring incentive for entry‑level deputies is $10,000.
BenefitsPay increase after seven months, and 40‑hour shifts with overtime. Lateral hires receive a $25,000 hiring incentive and 80 hours of sick leave immediately plus 80 vacation hours after six months. Full benefits package includes health, dental, vision, retirement, and paid holidays.
