Position: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) – Virginia Mason Franciscan Health

We are seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) to provide clerical and clinical support to Ophthalmologists/Optometrists in a high‑volume practice.

Job Summary and Responsibilities
  • Greets patients, rooms them, collects history and chart information such as chief complaint, medications, and allergies, and performs vision testing.
  • Ensures fee sheets are accurately completed and entered into Cerner per VM standards; takes intraocular pressure tests and refractometry, and performs additional tests as required (e.g., A‑ or B‑scan, Visual Fields, Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, Heidelberg Retina Tomography, Optical Coherence Tomography).
  • Assists physicians with in‑office procedures and administers ocular medications as prescribed; educates patients as needed.
  • Provides patient counseling regarding medication use and distributes pre‑ and post‑operative guidelines.
  • Conducts telephone triage to assess urgent versus emergent needs and creates schedules; works with e‑call physician teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Restocks and cleans exam rooms, performs area sweeps at end of day to maintain 5S standards, and closes rooms after the patient schedule.
Requirements
  • JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in an optometry or ophthalmology practice.
  • Working knowledge of anatomy, pharmacology, medical terminology, sterilization techniques, and basic eye care.
  • Understanding of ophthalmic testing and utilization of ophthalmic instruments; basic computer and office equipment skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer‑relations, communication, and organizational skills; ability to document chart entries in an electronic medical record.
