Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington. With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers.

Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world's deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality. At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect.

Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position is available in the lab of David Mac Pherson at Fred Hutch, which is focused on the biology of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We apply functional screens and analyses of genetically engineered mouse (GEM) and patient derived xenograft (PDX) models towards understanding how genetic alterations alter the biology of SCLC and alter sensitivity towards conventional and novel therapies.

Projects use cutting‑edge genomics and CRISPR screening approaches and we work closely with thoracic oncologist collaborators at Fred Hutch to help translate basic findings to the clinic. Some of these directions are supported by an NIH Lung Cancer SPORE award that promotes translational lung cancer research.

Responsibilities

The specific project will be developed by both the candidate and Dr. Mac Pherson based on areas of shared interest. Major areas of lab research include:
1) understanding response and resistance to therapy using a combination of functional screens, in vivo modeling and genomic analyses of sequentially captured patient samples;
2) developing innovative liquid biopsy assays to link patient phenotypes to clinical responses;
3) modeling biologically distinct subsets of SCLC using mouse and PDX systems. Projects are typically multidisciplinary and can involve co‑mentorship where appropriate. The position will require both independent research as well as the ability to collaborate closely with colleagues.

Other Expectations
  • Work collaboratively within the Mac Pherson Lab and with Fred Hutch and external collaborators.
  • Apply for postdoctoral fellowships and/or career development awards.
  • Deeply engage with their scientific problem and drive project direction.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Recent PhD or MD in Biology or related fields.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to design and execute experiments, interpret data and present results.
  • A record of publication in peer‑reviewed journals, with at least one lead author publication or preprint.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $80,172 to $95,014 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance. This position is not eligible for H‑1B sponsorship at this time.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well‑being, and financial security. Benefits include medical/vision, dental, flexible spending accounts, life, disability, retirement, family life support, employee assistance program, onsite health clinic, income‑based child care subsidy, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation (22 days per year), paid sick leave (up to 30 calendar days per occurrence of a qualifying reason), paid holidays (13 days per year), and paid parental leave (up to 4 weeks).
