Catering Service Manager – Bay Laurel Catering, Housing & Food Services

Housing & Food Services (HFS) supports a student community of over 10,000 residents and operates 40+ dining locations on campus. The Catering Service Manager leads the event operations team to conduct off‑site catered events of all types and sizes throughout the University of Washington campus and at related event venues.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Unit Manager to ensure goals and objectives are implemented.
• Promote a culture that focuses on excellent customer service.
• Maintain visibility and accessibility with customers and staff.
• Train and monitor performance in safety, cash handling, customer service, and food safety.
• Supervise direct reports, ensuring productivity, quality, and adherence to UW policies.
• Contribute to the preparation of performance appraisals.
• Recruit and select contract‑classified staff with peers and supervisors.
• Deliver presentations to small and large groups.

Operations and Customer Service

• Manage all phases of service during catered functions.
• Handle alcoholic beverages and inventory.
• Respond to customer feedback and resolve complaints.
• Schedule service staff with peers.
• Ensure appropriate table sets for all events.
• Maintain quality standards of food presentation.
• Monitor staff performance in safety, cash handling, service, and food safety.
• Identify and correct unsafe conditions.
• Use the Online Accident Reporting System (OARS) for accidents and injuries.
• Manage inventory from ordering to utilization.
• Maintain security measures against theft and vandalism.

Fiscal Management

• Maintain fiscal controls and resources.
• Review financial reports and staffing schedules.
• Report exceptions and variances to leadership.

CBORD and Supervision

• Oversee CBORD FSS functions and approve delegated work.
• Train staff on CBORD FSS.
• Use CBORD FSS reporting to monitor unit performance.
• Supervise Banquet Captains and student staff, providing feedback and development.

Impact to the University

Bay Laurel represents the University for many guests including prospective students, donors, and elected officials.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year of management experience, including fast‑paced catering experience.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication.
• Organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
• Computer experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience managing both on‑ and off‑site catered events.

Conditions of Employment

• Satisfactory reference check and education verification.
• Washington State Driver’s License.
• Washington State Food Worker Card within two weeks of hire.
• Washington State Class 12 Liquor License within 30 days of hire.
• Serv Safe Certification within three months and thereafter.
