Salary range: $116k to $224k, midpoint $170k. New hires receive between minimum and midpoint, with possible higher based on experience, internal equity, and market.

This is a term‑limited position with an anticipated assignment of 12 months.

General Purpose

Principal Organizational Design leads and executes key organizational design initiatives, aligning structure, roles, processes, and systems with strategic objectives. Working closely with senior leaders, the role applies advanced principles to improve efficiency, communication, and agility.

Essential Functions
  • Leads and executes organizational design initiatives, ensuring structures align with strategic objectives and operational needs.
  • Develops frameworks for design: role definitions, reporting structures, functional alignments.
  • Partners with senior leaders to assess current structures and propose changes that improve efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability.
  • Uses data‑driven insights and analysis to recommend and implement changes in structure, workflows, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborates with department leaders to understand needs and challenges, ensuring design recommendations support business strategies.
  • Provides expert consultation on talent, roles, processes, and technology alignment to drive success.
  • Ensures organizational changes align with culture, values, and growth plans.
  • Leads change management for design initiatives, ensuring smooth transitions and stakeholder buy‑in.
  • Develops and executes communication plans to inform and engage employees at all levels regarding changes.
  • Coaches and supports managers and leaders during transformation to ensure successful adoption of new structures and processes.
  • Delivers Team and Leader Effectiveness initiatives to improve team dynamics and support change.
  • Facilitates meetings to support senior leaders in establishing direction, goals, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Partners with ST People and department leaders to assess resource allocation and optimize talent deployment.
  • Works with cross‑functional People & Culture teams to reduce redundancy, enhance productivity, and promote a high‑performance culture.
  • Conducts regular assessments to track performance and effectiveness of structures and design changes.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor, subject matter expert, and coach to senior leaders and managers on all aspects of organizational design, structure, and leadership/team effectiveness.
  • Champions and models Sound Transit core values, demonstrating values‑based behaviors in everyday interactions across the agency.
  • Contributes to a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion in alignment with Sound Transit Equity & Inclusion Policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Development, Organizational Psychology, or related field; eight years of experience in organizational design, development, or management consulting with a proven track record of leading and implementing organizational change and structure…
