The Onyx Research Data Tech organization represents a major investment by GSK R&D and Digital & Tech, designed to deliver a step-change in our ability to leverage data, knowledge, and prediction to find new medicines. We are a full‑stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and Dev Ops, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:
- Building a next‑generation data experience for GSK’s scientists, engineers, and decision‑makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on “data mechanics”
- Providing best‑in‑class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate our predictive capabilities and attract top‑tier talent
- Aggressively engineering our data at scale to unlock the value of our combined data assets
- Implementing scientific technology products that leverage the data and capabilities provisioned by Onyx
As an Application Engineer I, you are an early‑career individual contributor who reliably delivers well‑defined tasks and small features with guidance. You will learn and apply Onyx’s engineering standards, participate in the full software development lifecycle, contribute to testing, documentation, and observability, and help operate our applications in production. You will collaborate closely with peers across product, design, data, and platform teams, and grow your impact by asking great questions, seeking feedback, and continuously improving how you build and run software.
Key Responsibilities Implement well‑defined features and bug fixes across the stack (frontend, backend, APIs) with guidance; write clean, readable, and well‑tested code.QL/gRPC) following secure‑by‑design, authentication/authorization, and interoperability standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in a communication related field or in Computer Science discipline together with significant demonstrable engagement experience within IT or Pharma company.
- 1 year of relevant software engineering experience (internships, co‑ops, research projects, or industry)
- Prior experience to deliver working software in a team setting (coursework, open‑source contributions, or prior roles)
- Experience with agile development practices and collaborative tools
- Programming:
Proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Python, Java, Go, JavaScript/Node.js); familiarity with modern language tooling and package management - Front‑end:
Basics in JavaScript/Type Script and a modern framework (e.g., React, Angular); HTML/CSS fundamentals - API development: REST fundamentals; request/response, pagination, error handling; use of tools like Postman/Insomnia
- SDLC/Dev Ops: git/Git Hub, branching and PR workflows; basic CI/CD concepts; test automation (unit/integration)
- Containers and cloud:
Docker fundamentals; exposure to Kubernetes; experience deploying to a cloud platform (GCP preferred; AWS/Azure acceptable) - Security:
