Assistant Attorney General - Labor & Personnel Division, Tumwater

Job Overview

The Washington State Attorney General’s Office’s Labor and Personnel Division (LPD) seeks to fill an Assistant Attorney General position that involves a mix of client advice and litigation. The position will be located in Tumwater, WA. The Assistant Attorney General represents and advises state agencies and many colleges and universities on labor and employment issues, including negotiations, arbitrations, wage laws, discrimination, discipline, and public disclosure.

The role includes civil litigation and appearance before administrative boards, arbitration, and state/federal courts.

• Meet with assigned clients, typically high‑level managers or directors, to provide advice and options on labor and employment law.
• Prepare witnesses for hearings.
• Draft motions, pleadings and other legal documents.
• Conduct and direct legal research.
• Respond to interrogatories and discovery.
• Mediating cases and litigating as required.

• At least three years of experience in litigation and client advice.
• Experience drafting briefs.
• Experience interviewing and preparing witnesses for testimony.
• Experience conducting hearings or oral arguments before administrative tribunals, superior or federal courts.
• Strong writing and advocacy skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to multi‑task and manage multiple cases.
• Labor and employment experience is preferred; experience with labor contracts and advising HR or upper‑level management is desirable.
• Law school accredited by the ABA or WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; licensed to practice in Washington State. Applicants actively pursuing admission will also be considered.
