Position: Managing Assistant Attorney General 1 (MAAG1) – Team Leader

Division: Labor and Industries (LNI), Olympia Section, Washington State Attorney General’s Office

Overview

The MAAG1 is one of four Team Leaders in the Olympia section. The successful candidate will supervise 3‑5 attorneys, manage the higher‑volume litigation caseload, provide direct legal representation in Industrial Insurance and related programs, and serve as a key member of the Olympia Management Team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor attorneys, overseeing travel, time‑keeping, leave approvals, and performance evaluations.
  • Set and monitor yearly goals, give and receive feedback, and support professional development.
  • Participate in administrative meetings, strategic planning, and process‑improvement projects.
  • Handle own case load in Industrial Insurance, other LNI programs, and assign cases to team members.
  • Review settlements, proposed decisions, and petitions for review; approve final decisions.
  • Back up the Section Chief as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Olympia Management Team and other divisions to achieve shared goals.
Required Qualifications (Minimum)
  • Graduated from an ABA‑accredited law school (or completed the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program) and licensed to practice law in Washington.
  • Ability to manage an active caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet short deadlines.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work with electronic case‑management tools and remote or hybrid hearings.
Preferred Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Experience in civil litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and oral argument before courts and tribunals.
  • Prior independent, sound, and ethical legal advising for clients.
  • Background in efficiently managing resources and workload for a legal team.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Interest in or experience with Industrial Insurance, worker health and safety, employment standards, or related areas.
