Position SummaryThe Safety Manager provides leadership in the assigned location and across disciplines for creation and compliance with safety practices supporting the company’s commitment to safety. The Safety Manager leads the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety policies, works closely with shipyard personnel, and represents the company with customers and regulators. Key responsibilities include emergency preparedness, evacuation procedures, ergonomic standards, reporting, and regulatory inspections.
EssentialFunctions And Major Responsibilities
- Guides and promotes safe work performance by developing safety systems, policies, and procedures; creates safety campaigns and communications aligned with company objectives.
- Reinforces safety policies by conducting audits, reporting statistics, and counseling managers and employees.
- Identifies and anticipates safety, health concerns and hazards, provides opinions on new equipment, investigates violations, and recommends preventative programs.
- Provides critical support to project management and fabrication teams meeting unique customer safety requirements.
- Interacts daily with the facility medical center to ensure appropriate care and follow‑up for Vigor and subcontractor employees.
- Coordinates and cooperates with local, state, and regional safety groups and agencies, acting as liaison with the Port of Portland, Coast Guard, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
- Updates procedures and process memorandums as necessary and supports company‑wide objectives.
- Manages the Marine Chemist and Shipyard Competent Person Programs.
- Oversees and coordinates the OSHA‑required Safety Committee.
- Identifies the need for, supervises, and conducts safety training programs.
- Conducts accident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and prevention efforts.
- Facilitates health and safety ownership by the line organization through integration of the Health and Safety Management System.
- Knowledge of safety principles, methods, and techniques needed to define, control, and eliminate unsafe physical conditions, equipment, and machine hazards, and risks in human performance.
- Practical knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to safety and occupational health.
- Knowledge of general management functions and practices needed to understand organizational objectives and safety principles.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written; constant interaction with all departments and employee levels and outside customers.
- Ability to lead, manage, and motivate employees in a safety environment.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
- Analytical research skills to solve problem areas and special requests.
- Negotiation and organizational skills.
