Position Description

The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time Cardiac Acute Care Service Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant position to provide patient care at the University of Washington Medical Center Montlake Campus. Successful candidates will be expected to support the department's commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community.

This position provides a faculty appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate in the Department of Surgery with an anticipated start date in Winter 2027. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The base salary range for this position will be: $10,834 - $15,391 per month commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Relocation assistance may be available for out-of-state candidates.

The Cardiac Acute Care Service Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team is a team of ten that provide 24/7/365 clinical care for inpatient acute care cardiac patients in the inpatient setting and is a member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, fellows, residents, and RNs providing acute care services to patients and families. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing independent and collaborative patient management of cardiac surgical patients following transfer from the intensive care unit through discharge to the outpatient setting.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Work on a dedicated cardiothoracic inter-professional team with other established APPs, Cardiothoracic surgeons, and Mechanical Circulatory support providers.
  • Perform minor bedside procedures and wound management as needed
  • Provide a full spectrum of care for cardiac acute care surgical patients
  • Participate in the education of nursing staff and surgical residents
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and process improvement activities for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Performs other related duties as required

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications

Applicants for this position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Current and valid WA State Registered Nurse Licensure for ARNP or Physician Assistant licensure for PA-C.
  • Graduate Degree from and accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Nationally certified ARNP/PA and eligible for DEA.
  • Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
  • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills
  • ACLS Certification
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic computer knowledge and command of basic personal computer skills
  • Prior critical care or cardiothoracic surgery experience strongly preferred; extremely motivated new graduates with relevant critical care and cardiothoracic surgical training backgrounds may be considered for hire with an extended onboarding period
