Job Requirements – Travel NICU RN (Level III/IV)

This is a Travel Registered Nurse – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) position at Swedish First Hill, a Providence-affiliated facility in Seattle, Washington. The unit cares for critically ill and premature newborns, including infants born at 23–24 weeks gestation.

1. Required qualifications
  • RN license: Active Washington RN license or a valid compact multistate RN license in hand at submission.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of NICU nursing experience.
    • Level III NICU: At least 3 years of experience is required.
    • Level IV NICU: At least 2 years of experience is required, according to the auto-offer screening criteria.
  • Certifications:
    • BLS — required.
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) — required.
  • Epic: Preferred, but not explicitly mandatory.
  • Patient population: Neonates and infants, including extremely premature newborns.
  • Floating: Must be willing to float to other campuses and units within the assignment's scope.
  • Travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers may be considered.

Important: Candidates with less than the required Level III/IV NICU experience may be screened out.

2. Required clinical skills

Candidates should have strong experience with:

  • Level III or Level IV NICU care.
  • Care of premature infants, including babies born at 23–24 weeks gestation.
  • Ventilator management, including conventional ventilation, CPAP, BiPAP, high-frequency ventilation, and oscillators.
  • Blood and blood product administration.
  • PICC lines, central lines, and implanted line care.
  • Neonatal medication dosage calculations.
  • Bottle, breast, and gavage feeding.
  • Oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tube placement or management.
  • Therapeutic hypothermia and cooling/warming blankets.
  • Cardioversion and defibrillation.
  • Attendance at high-risk deliveries.
  • Care related to neonatal surgeries.

ECMO experience is not required. The unit provides the other listed advanced neonatal therapies and procedures.

3. Schedule and assignment details
  • Shift: Day shift, 7:00 AM–7:30 PM.
  • Schedule: Four 12-hour shifts.
  • Unit size: 77-bed NICU.
  • Average census: Approximately 50 patients.
  • Patient ratio: 1:2.
  • Weekend coverage: Intermittent weekend coverage is required.
  • Block scheduling: Can be accommodated when requested; three or more consecutive shifts may be possible.
  • Float requirements:
    • Other NICU campuses, including Issaquah and Edmonds.
    • Pediatrics, PICU, or newborn nursery assignments at First Hill, generally limited to newborns and infants when floated.
    • May occasionally be assigned as a sitter.
