Our client is seeking an Analytical Chemist with expertise in both analytical and some synthetic chemistry, to join their multidisciplinary R&D team. This role is critical for advancing two high‑priority projects and will have broad impact across protein design and bioconversion process development. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment and bring both hands‑on bench skills and creative problem‑solving to novel molecule production.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize chemical and chemoenzymatic methods for the synthesis, modification, and characterization of carbohydrates and other small organic compounds.
  • Design and execute synthetic routes for carbohydrate and organic acid‑based molecules, intermediates, and analogs to support enzyme design and analytics.
  • Collaborate closely with protein design engineers, computational scientists, and biochemists to integrate synthetic and advanced analytical chemistry into bioconversion and enzyme design workflows.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data; maintain detailed records in ELN/LIMS.
  • Contribute to project planning, troubleshooting, and cross‑functional technical discussions.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, or related field (or M.S. with significant industry experience).
  • Experience with carbohydrate chemistry (e.g., glycosylation, carbohydrate‑modifying enzymes, carbohydrate derivatization) and characterization.
  • Strong background in synthetic organic chemistry, including purification and analytical techniques (NMR, HPLC, GCMS, LCMS, etc.).
  • Experience with bioconversion, chemoenzymatic synthesis, or integration of chemical and biological processes is highly desirable.
  • Comfortable serving as the sole synthetic chemistry domain expert and contributor.
  • Experienced in selecting and managing chemistry CROs to produce and characterize molecules of interest.
  • Track record of innovation and problem‑solving in a research or industrial setting.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and safety requirements for chemical synthesis/analytics in a research environment.
Bonus Skills
  • Experience in automated sample preparation and liquid‑handling instruments (e.g., Biomek, King Fisher) is a plus.
  • Experience with enzyme‑catalyzed transformations or protein engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with downstream processing, process development, or scale‑up in a biomanufacturing context.
