Campus Public Safety Officer

Seattle University is seeking a Campus Public Safety Officer to serve as the first responder for the university under the direction of the Public Safety Supervisor or their designee. This dynamic, active role requires vigilance, quick decision-making and engagement with the campus community. The Public Safety Officer is a uniformed, non‑commissioned officer position that actively patrols campus grounds, provides essential medical and security aid, coordinates emergency services, documents critical incidents and ensures the safety and well‑being of students, faculty, staff and visitors.

This role is deeply focused on community service and mental health support, as well as providing assistance to the greater campus community.

Position Description

The Campus Public Safety Officer maintains a shift schedule that includes coverage during campus closures and holidays. Officers work collaboratively in teams of 5-6 personnel, including a supervisor and dispatcher. Our department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Officers are assigned to one of our teams. Teams rotate between day and night shifts every six months to ensure balanced coverage.

Safety & Security Operations (60%)
  • Conduct proactive patrols to monitor security, prevent incidents, and ensure campus safety.
  • Respond to non‑emergency requests, provide campus escorts, and assist with general security concerns.
  • Operate the communications center, including monitoring safety systems, CCTV, dispatching responders, and keeping records.
  • Uphold Seattle University policies while maintaining a customer‑service‑focused approach.
Emergency Response & Incident Management (20%)
  • Serve as the first responder to emergencies, including medical incidents, accidents, and security threats.
  • Provide immediate medical assistance and coordinate emergency services (EMS, fire, law enforcement).
  • Document and maintain accurate records of incidents, ensuring compliance with legal and institutional policies.
Communications Center Operations (10%)
  • Operate the campus Public Safety communications center.
  • Monitor security and fire life safety systems and dispatch responders as needed.
  • Answer and triage campus emergency line calls, remaining calm and coordinating appropriate response.
  • Maintain computer‑aided dispatch program to track calls, incidents, and officer activity.
  • Utilize campus video surveillance system to deter and respond to incidents.
