Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a non-permanent Maintenance Mechanic 3 to support the State Materials Laboratory, a multi-building, 60,000+ square foot complex housing five independent testing laboratories and more than 3,000 pieces of specialized equipment. This position will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing advanced journey-level maintenance, repair, and construction activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of laboratory facilities and systems.

In this role, you will maintain building systems and infrastructure, procure and manage materials and supplies, and provide technical oversight and direction to maintenance contractors. Our top candidate will demonstrate advanced mechanical and facilities maintenance expertise, strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of building systems and equipment, and the capacity to communicate effectively and work independently in a highly technical environment.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic 3 will:

  • Perform journey-level construction and repair tasks across multiple skilled trades (carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, welding, and general building maintenance).
  • Diagnose system and structural issues, evaluate repair methods, and implement solutions using hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
  • Maintain and repair mechanical systems such as boilers, pumps, motors, ventilation systems, and controls.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, identify deficiencies or hazards, and take corrective action to avoid facility downtime.
  • Respond to on-call maintenance emergencies as required to support mission-critical systems and equipment and respond to outages and other emergency events.
  • Construct, modify, and repair building systems, laboratory spaces, laboratory equipment, workstations, structural components, and facility equipment to ensure safety and operational reliability.
  • Interpret building plans, technical schematics, and specifications to plan and execute maintenance and construction projects.
  • Maintain service records, work logs, equipment histories, and material usage in maintenance management systems.
  • Serve as acting lead or point of contact when the supervisor is absent, ensuring continuity of maintenance operations.
Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required
:

Multi-Trade Maintenance & Technical Proficiency
  • Ability to perform journey-level work across multiple skilled trades, including carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repair, electrical, HVAC, welding, and general construction.
  • Skill in fabricating, assembling, installing, modifying, inspecting, and repairing building systems, components, and mechanical equipment using approved methods and materials.
Preventive Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution
  • Skill in diagnosing building system and equipment issues, identifying root causes, and determining appropriate corrective actions, including repair or replacement, to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Skill in performing preventive maintenance, inspections, and scheduled servicing of building systems and equipment to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
Tools, Equipment & Systems Operation
  • Ability to safely operate, maintain, and utilize a wide range of hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic instruments in support of maintenance and repair activities.
