Monthly Payments

  • Widow or widower age 60 or older (age 50 or older if disabled)
  • Widow or widower any age caring for the deceased’s child who is under age 16 or disabled
  • Unmarried child of the deceased who is younger than age 18 (or up to age 19 if they’re a full‑time student in an elementary or secondary school)
  • Age 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22
  • A stepchild, grandchild, step grandchild, or adopted child under certain circumstances
  • Parents age 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased for at least half of their support
  • One-time Payment/Spouse of a worker who lives in the same house.
    If they were living apart, the surviving spouse or child(ren) can still receive the lump-sum if, during the month the worker died, they:
    Were already receiving benefits on the worker's record OR Became eligible for benefits upon the worker's death. Child(ren) are only eligible if no surviving spouse.

Call for assistance or visit a local Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not currently receiving benefits, they must apply for this payment within two years of the date of death.

Description

Provides monthly cash benefits for the eligible survivors of workers covered under Social Security who have died. The amount received depends on the worker's age and how much they have earned. Additionally makes a one‑time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse of a worker who has died. If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who is eligible for benefits on the deceased's record in the month of death.

The lump‑sum payment is in addition to any monthly survivors insurance benefits that may be due.

Manages application and administration offices for federal Social Security programs that provide financial assistance to vulnerable adults.
