Position: Traffic Technician I

Under the direction of the Public Works Director/ City Engineer, or designee, this position is responsible for assisting in the repair and fabrication of city signs using the computer and plotter equipment. Reports to and assists the Traffic Technician II and Roads Superintendent in all needs related to the City’s traffic safety.

  • Assists in developing layouts for road signs and markings.
  • Installs City signs and pavement markings established by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Assists in fabricating City signs using computer and vinyl cutter/plotter. Repairs City signs.
  • Assists in purchasing and maintaining inventory of City signs and signposts and mounting materials.
  • Uses GIS/GPS programs for preparation of the City's mapping and sign inventory program.
  • Assists with the collection of field data for reporting and planning purposes, as well as preparation of GIS data base analysis. Maintains mapping of all City signs so information can be used for FEMA.
  • Assists in conducting field site inspections for traffic calming;
  • Assists in maintaining files for all signs in the City by using the geographical information system (GIS) program.
  • Installs new signs and pavement markings, speed humps, and radar speed advisory signs.
  • Assists in calculating quantities and cost estimates for assigned public works and utility construction projects; assists in obtain vendor/contractor price quotes, produce requisitions, and sign off on purchase orders for equipment, materials, and supplies related to work assignments.
  • Assists in performing field work including surveying and staking of in-house work force projects using a variety of technical survey equipment; reduces field survey notes and computer traverses, grades, closures, distances, and areas for office use.
  • Assists in conducting traffic and parking surveys, compiles and tabulates information and produces traffic count reports; maintains related reports and files.
  • Assists in developing striping, signage, and/or detour plans related to traffic flow and control; makes recommendations regarding traffic control devices.
  • Files and retrieves engineering and related plans, maps, exhibits and various documents; updates files and maintains document reference and retrieval systems.
  • Assists with public outreach events.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
Associate’s Degree in Civil/Traffic Engineering or related field; and one (1) year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications:
  • Possession of Certificates MOT;
    Signs Technician Levels I (includes Pavement);
    Pavement Markings II - Courses:
    Signs and Pavement Markings, Traffic Signals, Work Zone Traffic Control Safety - Level 1 Certification within six (6) months of hire and Level II within nine (9) months.
  • Possession of MOT Intermediate Certificate within six (6) months of hire and MOT Advanced within one (1) year.
  • Possession of a valid, State of Florida driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of technical writing and data preparation.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, protective equipment, and clothing.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and techniques used for traffic sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of office administration practices, concepts, and automation applications.
